Preventing a Costly Launch Mistake

An automotive company launched a blog without conducting user research, assuming customers would engage with long-form content about car maintenance and industry news. I conducted in-context field usability testing in an actual automotive parts store to discover how real customers interacted with the content in their natural environment.

The research revealed a critical mismatch: the company designed for desktop users in an office, but customers were accessing content on mobile devices while standing in a busy retail store, completely changing the use case and content needs.

Core Hypothesis

"By testing the blog in the actual retail environment where customers make purchasing decisions, we will uncover critical usability issues and content mismatches that lab-based testing would miss."

Field Research Methodology

In-Context Recruitment

Recruited 12 participants directly in an automotive parts store during regular business hours. All participants were actively shopping for parts or accessories, ensuring authentic context and immediate relevance.

Real-World Testing

Conducted 15-minute intercept interviews and usability tests in the actual retail environment. Participants used their own devices (primarily mobile phones) to access the blog while navigating the store.

Environmental Factors

Tested in realistic conditions: background noise, interruptions from store staff, time pressure, and the need to multitask between shopping and content consumption.

Critical Insights from Field Testing

Technology Expectations Mismatch

Some customers didn't know how to use a laptop and expected it to be a touch screen. Customers exclusively used smartphones or tablets, creating a fundamental usability barrier.

Design Usability Issues

The current design was not usable and would not help accomplish the goal for the blog. Major design flaws prevented users from successfully completing basic tasks.

Goal Misalignment

The blog would not drive customers to the eCommerce site as intended. Fundamental disconnect between user needs and business objectives.

Mobile-First Reality

92% of participants used mobile devices in-store, but the blog was designed for desktop. Text was too small, navigation was difficult, and the experience was fundamentally broken for mobile users.

Most Interesting Discovery

One of the most interesting things that I found out was that some of the customers didn't know how to use a laptop and expected it to be a touch screen. They exclusively used either their smartphone or tablet.

Design Implications

This discovery fundamentally changed our understanding of the target audience's technology preferences and capabilities. It highlighted the critical importance of designing for mobile-first experiences and touch interfaces, rather than assuming desktop computer proficiency.

Actionable Improvements

Recommendation 1: Halt Desktop-First Launch

Immediately pause the blog launch and redesign for mobile-first. The current desktop-optimized design is fundamentally unusable for the 92% of users accessing content on mobile devices in-store.

Recommendation 2: Pivot Content Strategy

Replace long-form "industry trend" articles with short, actionable content: product comparison guides, quick installation tips, and "which part do I need" decision trees that help customers make immediate purchasing decisions.

Recommendation 3: Touch-First Design

Design exclusively for touch interfaces with large touch targets, simple navigation, and mobile-optimized loading speeds. Eliminate any desktop-specific interaction patterns.

Recommendation 4: In-Store Integration

Add QR codes on product shelves linking directly to relevant, mobile-optimized content. This bridges the gap between physical shopping and digital content in a way that actually helps the customer.
